I am also in Mar Vista, at Venice edge. I totally agree with everything you wrote. Very scary to think of being hit by a car while walking. I would also add to warn people not to stand near the edge of the sidewalk when waiting for a light at intersections as one never knows if the car will hit everybody when making a turn.

Understood! :) Yes the driver was caught - s/he didn't leave the scene or anything like that. I have no idea what ended up happening.
I take epic walks (and short walks) all over my neighborhood (Mar Vista), and I cannot tell you how many times drivers have turned right in front of me at a light, turned left while I was 1/2 way through the crosswalk, not stopped before making a right and coming so close to me that I could feel the breeze of the car through my shirt. Some of them flip me off. Others just wave and keep going (like, if they wave at me it's ok to almost kill me). I am not on my phone when this happens. I have nearly been hit on literally dozens of occasions with my elderly German Shepherd, even. Drivers are emboldened, aggressive, an flat out irresponsible these days. And yes, so are pedestrians. But I want everyone who reads this to keep in mind what it is to hit someone in your car when you are surrounded by a thousand pounds of airbags and metal, vs someone who is surrounding by nothing but cloth and shoes. Walkers, please get OFF your phones, LOOK UP! Drivers, CALM THE F DOWN and please please get off your phones and leave the house on time so you don't stress out in the car. I'm beggin you. xx

Yvette, of course, I couldn't agree with you more. I was just adding my 5 cents about what I have experienced, not specific to the poor individual who was run down like a spec of dust. That driver needs to be put away for a long time! Was he caught?

Deena, I understand that but with all due respect, this collision and subsequent death of a pedestrian occurred not because of a distracted walker on a cell phone, but because the driver chose to gun it around a car that had stopped for the victim who was attempting to cross the street inside of a marked crosswalk. Vastly different things.

I have almost injured or killed many people who cross the street legally but looking at their phones and not even aware they are walking in a crosswalk and in immediate danger from cars going at legal speeds!

When will we see beacon lights or something similar at McLaughlin & Charnock. We lost a neighbor there in December> We don't know whether it was due to lack of adequate signage, lighting, or negligence on the part of the driver or pedestrian. I know beacons work; I've seen them in action. In the meantime, let's see some enforcement of traffic law from LAPD.

The paperwork appears to be refiled and the Recall continues. Bonin did win with 70% of the vote but only 20% of registered voters even voted. With the mess he’s created and the dangers of death or injury he’s created by making the roads unsafe with road diets he’s sure to be recalled.

Facts: Mike Bonin won 71% of the vote on a 17% turnout which equates to 12% of the registered voters, not the population, not the adult population, just 12% of the registered voters. To quote Gil Scott Heron: "mandate my ass." This probably won't get posted, the people behind Open Mar Vista lack substance, instead relying upon fake infographics to mislead where they don't have what it takes.

But here in Los Angeles, a recall effort is arising from Democrats, Berniecrats and even some Trump supporters to recall Mike Bonin. Autocratic approaches to real problems that follow directions from the radicalized bike community have repelled so many, that Councilman Bonin faces potential recall with many who supported him in the past joining the effort. Only the fringe bike community holds on and hope to continue pressing Councilman Bonin into more bonehead moves to cement his re-call.

I understand that this crosswalk was particularly dangerous, but why is your article more focused on that than the willful negligence of this driver? To use a quote like "unfortunately people are in a hurry" sounds like an excuse for the driver instead of an indictment, which is a far better response to such a horrific and preventable collision. There are pedestrians crossing roads all over the city. We are culpable, as drivers, every time we fail to stop for them, no matter if there are flashing lights, red lights, or no lights at all. I would encourage your staff to focus on distracted, aggressive drivers in further articles. The blame is on them / us.

Very disappointed that so called progressives and the allegedly progressive media are no better than the alternative facts of Breitbart and Alex Jones Info Wars. Some fact checking as follows:
The recall is being led by Alexis who is an elected Bernie delegate who resides in CD 11. John and Ken have nothing to do with the recall other than reporting on it. The Jimmy Dore show has also reported on the recall.
Regarding Alexis's foray into political activism, this started well before the road diet issue. He marched for Bernie at the DNC in Philly, and led protests at LAX against the Muslim travel ban.
Alexis has spoken with multiple media outlets including CNN, MSNBC, NY Times, and KPFK to name a few. Bernie sanders has appeared on fox does this make him alt-right?
The recall campaign is a PAC and abides by all financial disclosure laws. All donations over $100 are reported to the city's ethics office. The allegation of anonymous pledges relates to CrowdPac that gives donors the option of sharing their donations on the website.
As for the recall, this is truly a grassroots progressive movement. It was started and has grown out of the discontent of the constituents and small business owners who have been so negatively impacted by the decisions of the city. Decisions that were done without going through the Democratic process and without proper community engagement or outreach.
For the record, Alexis and other members of the community myself included asked Bonin for a meeting. He refused.
As for the author's assertion that Alexis is a bully, perhaps the author should take a close look at himself and the slanderous piece that he wrote. I have worked side by side with Alexis for the last few months and there is no one more dedicated to then progressive movement. It is truly disappointing to read articles such as this.

What a crazy idea! Universal City and Universal Studios are already heavily impacted by traffic. A gondola would have to travel several miles, over Barham Blvd, and over rough terrain and some homes on the spine of the Hollywood Hills. If such a gondola is built it would be much more practical to have it run from Travel Town in Griffith Park, or excavate a parking lot below Cahuenga peak and have a gondola or funicular take passengers from the parking lot to the top of Mount Lee where the sign is.

The woman who was killed in this incident could not have committed suicide as she has a young kid whom she loved dearly. This must have happened due to something or someone provoking her. Dear God - please help this woman obtain justice so she can rest in peace . She is one of the most generous, kind and loving person while she was in this world. Prayers to the family.

We are still unsure if the noise and frequence of flights is not entirely attributible to the temporary closure of some runways for construction. Has the lawsuit looked at that?
